Well, at least I think they have found a home. These little guys are so cute, so loving, so appreciative of all you do for them. They follow us around when they are awake…each has suffered more than one soft kick or slight toe crunch because they tend to wrap themselves around our feet, we forget and move one way or the other and…ouch!!
I named them. Had to. I mean…”Puppy #1″ and “Puppy #2”? Oh, please. I first named them Jacob & Marley (Jacob being the black and brown) but Bob said “Jacob” was too close to “Jake”, one of our dogs. [Like, what difference does that make if we aren’t keeping them…Bob?] So I changed it to ‘Jason’. Eh….lackluster. Marley didn’t work for the other, either…sounds good “on paper” but calling him…nah. We spent half our lives in Hawaii…why not Hawaiian names? The black and white is Kona which is Hawaiian for leeward and the other is Kai meaning water. Those names fit.
They are amazingly well behaved. As they get more “at home”, they tend to busy themselves with edges of rugs. Not good. They will steal shoes and the socks out of my work shoes that are stored by the door. Don’t seem to chew them, per se, but not a good habit and we discourage it. They have learned the word “no”, surprisingly, and pretty much obey the command. Kona decided that one of my flower pots on the deck – full, thank you very much, of beautiful flowers – was the most fun and has destroyed it! He also keeps pulling out the irrigation bubbler that is in there. What a brat! I tried to build a barrier but to no avail. My darling Cocker Spaniel of years ago in Hawaii was brought into our family as an older puppy. My pool deck was covered with potted plants and Shauna systematically destroyed one after the other. I finally realized it wasn’t about the plant but loved to play with the pot! So, I gave her one and the destruction stopped! Not sure that is the issue here. Kona and Kai also love to play in the profuse foliage – well, the once profuse foliage – of my ivy plant on the deck. They eat their treats there and wrestle in there and….sigh.
Knowing how to use the doggie door has been a benefit, though they still don’t know to go outside to go potty (grrr!). When they first wake up we take them outside but we don’t always make it in time. Going through the paper towels pretty fast…! Our diligence will pay off….eventually….
The puppies play a lot together but Sara and Jake are playing more with them, as well. That is a good sign. Jake gets jealous occasionally but for the most part is ok. Jake is the only one who can get up in our laps (he’s the Jack Russell/Rat Terrier x) and when Kona tries to get up in my lap in my chair, Jake blasts up and takes a ‘my mommie’ posture. Which is ok as long as there is no ugliness. I have to say that the puppies think Sara is the cat’s meow [or the puppies bark?] and she spends a lot of time with them. Motherly instinct? Maybe. Kona also is fascinated with my Sophie kitten. Sophie is my black kitten..3 yrs old now..tres spoiled and very much the queen. She is tolerating the puppies and as long as they are not too-too, she is ok with them. Kona asserts himself a little much sometimes and she smacks at him. My read is that he is not being aggressive but wants to play. He is gentle in his approach but “in her face”, yeah? I keep him at bay when I see it – not fair to Sophie, otherwise.
Cleaning house the other day my vacuum suddenly quit. OMG! Quick look over at the plug allowed me to see Kona dashing past with the cord in his mouth…having “ripped” it out of the wall! No damage. And it was funny…sort of…kinda…
We are not sure what these puppies will grow up to be. Kai has huge feet and is stocky in build. Kona is finer in build and seems to be more leggy. But, you know what? It doesn’t matter. They are my babies.
